WHAT I WANT FOR WRITERS

I’m not one to cry on every occasion. It’s just not my style. Mostly, I like creepy things. But one situation gets my goat every time…Music concerts.

Picture it. You’re at a music concert swaying to the beat with a bunch of drunks, smoke floats through the air, and you sing, probably poorly, with your new venue-friends. The vocalist pulls the mic from her mouth and the crowd continues. Still swaying, still drinking, still singing the lyrics, all without the professional singer’s help.

I can only imagine how powerful that moment feels for the band. They’ve spent months, even years, writing and perfecting the precise words to flow with a rhythm specific to their genre, their world. And people are reiterating those words, those feelings, that the writers have spent an enormous amount of time creating. Chokes me up and gives me goose bumps every time. No joke!

Now imagine being the creator of countless phrases that readers have adopted into their everyday conversations, that when placed in the proper context, leaves no room for interpretation.

There’s no place like home.

I see dead people.

They’re Here!

We all float down here.

Whatever you do, don’t fall asleep.

Professional speeches are written by, you guessed it, writers. Writers that take time to learn the speaker, adapt the language to that speaker, which then allows for a powerful delivery standing the test of time.

I Have a Dream!

Ask not what your country can do for you…

Four score and seven years ago.

Still, I’ll Rise.

I could go on forever about my love for words, but let’s be honest—you don’t want that. Instead, I want you to have one take away from this short memory lane stroll.

As writers, we have power. We have the power to change a mindset, heck, even change the world. We can use our talent for the best of good, or the worse of evil. It’s our choice.

That’s the power of words. That’s the power of a writer. We’re in it together.
